Summer reading.

The Naughty Archbishop.
.
We intellectuals love to share with the Community College graduates what we are reading for the summer - and believe you me - you ignoramuses, it is so not an Oprah's book club selection either.
.
Of course I'm just finishing my re-read of Brideshead Revisited - I might have said, my revisit... oh, oh, ah, ah, ah, ohhhhhhhhh! Oh you funny man you! And I've long thrown the Divine Comedy in the dumpster - what was with that Dante guy anyway?
.
No, now I'm breaking the spine of Weakland's memoir... his tell all - Hollywood Wives style summation of his life.
.
Seriously, with all due respect to his office, A Pilgrim In a Pilgrim Church by Archbishop Weakland is a fascinating, if not at moments, difficult read - in a heart-wrenching sort of way. I just picked it up this afternoon and I've been jumping all over the contents ever since, reading here and there, as well as beginning at the beginning. I think it is an important book historically, and definitely absorbing in the revelations by such a prominent figure in the American Episcopate. I have a million thoughts on his 'revelations' and the scary thing is - I know what he is talking about. I don't think I ever met him - but it sure seems as if I did. (In other words, he wasn't alone in hisFont size vision, mission, agenda for the Church.)
.
I recall when he was named Archbishop of Milwaukee, I thought to myself, "Oh good, a monastic Archbishop - he will restore things as they should be!" Oh, oh, oh, ha, ha, ha, ha, ohhhhh, oh, oh, ah, ah, ah, oooooooooooo! - such a silly boy!
.
So far, the memoir is helpful towards understanding the tragedy of the Archbishop, as well as the dysfunction of the post-Councilor Church in the U.S.. It's a real page turner. The really sad thing is - from what I gather - the Vatican knew. They knew the problems with Weakland and the other progressives - but nothing was done.

The First Lady of Fashion

Shelley's meteoric rise.
.
Seriously.
.
The fashion industry made it clear at its annual awards ceremony Monday night that it's looking to future stars to see it past the doldrums of the recession, shunning longtime favorites and honoring a largely new guard: Rodarte, Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang — and Michelle Obama.
.
The Council of Fashion Designers of America's special tribute award went to the first lady, considered a new player in this world.

.
Noting her "meteoric rise as a fashion icon," CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg said Obama had "a unique look that balances the duality of her lives" in her roles as trusted adviser to her husband, President Barack Obama, and busy mother to their two daughters.

.
But it took host Tracey Ullman less than two minutes in her opening monologue to mention the new first lady of fashion. As complimentary as she was, though, Ullman, a Brit, did say Obama shouldn't have worn a cardigan to meet Queen Elizabeth II. - Fashion World Honors New Stars
.
The American fashion industry is officially dead.

Ryan Seacrest found on a piece of toast...

YES!
.
I saw this very same image on a piece of toast and had to draw it - I was so hungry, I ate it... with psychedelic peanut butter of course - you know - that stuff from Georgia.

Who am I?

"I belong to a literary ground, comprised – including retired profs of literature, history and philosophy – mainly of very educated priest friends and a pair of physicians."
.
(Oh my.)

Pray for Oprah.

Stalking Obama.
.
I hear she is beyond hysterical these days leading up to the inaugaration.

Sister stories.

In the 1950's, the nuns disapproved of girls wearing make-up in grade school. They said it looked cheap; pierced ears were considered cheap too. And of course, scarves tied on the chin - they knew exactly what that meant Missie.

Here is something you wouldn't find out in an ordinary meme...

Cathy of Alexandria was a huge figure skating star.
Cathy writes: "There was a time when I would have actually gone to Nationals.... I went to the Olympic Festival when it was held here." Yet she laments, "Today, I can barely tell you who the up and comers are or who the current national champions are." Apparently experiencing a sort of literary disorientation, Cathy writes, (You know,) "I'm not sure exactly when I quit the sport of figure skating."
Later on, in an obvious attempt to put to rest all the rumors and questions if drinking had anything to do with her dropping out of the skating circuit, Cath writes, "I think it all ended for me when it became apparent that it was all about the jumps." Continuing with that thread, she added how she would, "wobble and land with (her) arms flailing..." (landing) "in the "kiss and cry" area"
After attacking skater Surya Bonaly, calling her a, "French brat and all-around poor sport," Cathy writes, "I'm not even sure I'd call" her a woman. "Clearly, sexuality has nothing to do with how well (she) skate(s)." Oddly enough, she abruptly ends her tirade about Bonaly with this cryptic statement, "I feel like someone should be arrested for child pornography."
Without giving everything away, her memoir concludes somewhat poignantly: Cathy wrote, (Now) "If I want to see people hitting the ice for a few hours, I'll film myself skating at Parade Stadium."
That just sounds so Norma Desmond, doesn't it? The entire post is quite sad.
(I wonder if her friend Adoro's real name is Nancy?)

What I really think... and other New Year's resolutions.

Wouldn't that be a great post - or series of posts? "What I really think..."
I want to do it - you know, how I'm always critiquing Spirit Daily - I could do the same thing with other blogs. But my New Year's resolution is a restraining power and that means I am going to try and stop saying (writing) and posting inappropriate things. I'm going to try really hard to be nice to people and say good things, things people need to hear, things that will really help them. I noticed when another blogger linked to a post I did, he felt the need to add the following cautionary statement - "Be forewarned, Terry sometimes writes things that may offend some people." (I had no idea I did that. No wonder certain blogs I respect do not link to me, and those who once linked, no longer do so.)

Some British bloggers have referred to me as "off-the-wall" and I believe one even suggested I was eccentric. Now that is coming from British bloggers and you know how fond British people are of their eccentrics - like the Royals! (Also, keep in mind some of the British TV reality shows, such as, Absolutely Fabulous, Faulty Towers, Keeping Up Appearances, and others like them which document normal life in the UK. Yeah - really normal all right. And yet they think I'm eccentric and off-the-wall - I don't get it.)
So from now on, I'm going to try and be normal.
(Photo: Homely, old, fat-lady blogger who failed in her New Year's resolution to lose weight and bought a corset instead. - - - What?)

Mommie Dearest

Madonna cancels Christmas - LOL!

The devout Kabbalahist - new word for Grinch, or pseudo-Jew - has cancelled Christmas for her family. (Look for the remake of Mommie Dearest in about 15 to 20 years - or rather, when the kids are all grown up and damaged.) Read the entire story here if you are at all interested.

And now, another Top 10 Meme...

The Top 10 best pictures on my blog! EVER!!!!!

(In no particular order of course. My apologies for not including any Serial Mom classics.)
Happy Holidays!

Yes - I am excited about Christmas...

And I don't care who knows it...

Ray sent me a photo of Cathy's Christmas tree. He said she's been busy emptying bottles of beer and therefore unable to blog, but she managed to get that tree up for Thanksgiving. (Looks like she got her shopping done too - or is she re-gifting again?)

Another email joke...

This one is from a blonde...

A blonde decides to try horseback riding, even though she has had no lessons, nor prior experience. She mounts the horse unassisted, and the horse immediately springs into motion. It gallops along at a steady and rhythmic pace, but the blonde begins to slide from the saddle. In terror, she grabs for the horse's mane, but cannot seem to get a firm grip. She tries to throw her arms around the horse's neck, but she slides down the horse's side anyway.. The horse gallops along, seemingly impervious to its slipping rider.

Finally, giving up her frail grip, the blonde attempts to leap away from the horse and throw herself to safety.

Unfortunately, her foot has become entangled in the stirrup; she is now at the mercy of the horse's pounding hooves as her head is struck against the ground over and over. As her head is battered against the ground, she is mere moments away from unconsciousness when, to her great fortune, Frank, theWal-Mart greeter, sees her dilemma and unplugs the horse.

............And you thought all they did was say Hello.
(Hi Cathy!)
